3. Price and Payment

The purchase price is $24,500.00, paid by Buyer to Seller in full on October 10, 2026 by cashier’s check. Seller acknowledges receipt of the full purchase price.

4. Transfer of Title

Upon receipt of the full purchase price, Seller will sign the certificate of title over to Buyer, complete the odometer disclosure on it where required, and deliver it to Buyer together with the keys and any lien release. Buyer is responsible for applying for a new title and registration and for paying all applicable taxes and fees within the time the state requires. Each party will complete any notice of sale or transfer that the state requires of that party.

5. Seller’s Statement of Ownership

Seller states that Seller is the lawful owner of the vehicle, has the full right to sell it, and that the vehicle is free of all liens, security interests and other encumbrances. Seller will defend Buyer’s title against the claims of any person claiming through Seller.

6. “As Is” Sale

THE VEHICLE IS SOLD “AS IS” AND “WITH ALL FAULTS.” SELLER MAKES NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, EXCEPT THE STATEMENTS ABOUT OWNERSHIP AND MILEAGE IN THIS BILL OF SALE AND ANY WARRANTY THAT APPLICABLE STATE LAW DOES NOT ALLOW TO BE DISCLAIMED.

Buyer acknowledges having had the opportunity to inspect and test drive the vehicle, or to have it inspected by a mechanic of Buyer’s choice, before signing, and accepts the vehicle in its present condition.

7. Odometer Disclosure Statement

Federal law (and state law, if applicable) requires that you state the mileage in connection with the transfer of ownership. Failure to complete or providing a false statement may result in fines and/or imprisonment.

I, Robert Hayes, state that the odometer of the vehicle described above now reads 68,450 miles (no tenths) and, to the best of my knowledge, that the odometer reading:

☐ reflects the actual mileage of the vehicle;
☐ reflects the amount of mileage in excess of its mechanical limits;
☐ is NOT the actual mileage. WARNING — ODOMETER DISCREPANCY.

This statement supplements the odometer disclosure that Seller completes on the certificate of title. It is not required for vehicles exempt under 49 CFR § 580.17. Buyer acknowledges receiving this statement.

8. Governing Law

This Bill of Sale is governed by the laws of the State of Texas. It is the entire agreement between Seller and Buyer about the sale of the vehicle.

What it's for

A vehicle bill of sale records a private sale: who sold which vehicle (identified by its VIN) to whom, for what price, on what date and in what condition. The buyer uses it to title and register the vehicle and to show the price for sales tax; the seller keeps it as proof of when the vehicle — and responsibility for it — changed hands.

Ownership itself passes through the certificate of title, which the seller signs over to the buyer; the bill of sale supports it. Federal law (49 U.S.C. § 32705 and 49 CFR Part 580) requires the seller to disclose the mileage on the title at transfer. Vehicles of model year 2011 and newer need the disclosure until they are 20 years old; vehicles of model year 2010 and older, vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 16,000 pounds and vehicles that are not self-propelled are exempt. Titling, tax and notarization rules are set by each state, so check your state DMV’s requirements.

The template is written for an “as is” sale between private parties with the price paid in full at signing. It includes the seller’s statement that the title is free of liens, an odometer statement and an optional notary acknowledgment for states or buyers that ask for one.

What it should include

  • names and addresses of the seller and the buyer
  • the vehicle: year, make, model, body style, color and VIN
  • the odometer reading and the seller’s odometer certification
  • the sale price, the payment method and the date of sale
  • an “as is” clause stating that no warranties are given
  • the seller’s statement that they own the vehicle and the title is free of liens
  • signatures of both parties, and a notary acknowledgment where required

Frequently asked questions

Does a vehicle bill of sale need to be notarized?

In most states, no — a bill of sale signed by the buyer and the seller is enough. A few states do require a notarized bill of sale or notarized signatures on the title, and some DMVs ask for notarization only in particular cases, such as a missing title or a vehicle titled in another state. Requirements change, so check your state DMV’s current rule before you meet the buyer. The template includes an optional notary acknowledgment you can complete when it is needed.

Does a bill of sale transfer ownership of a car?

Not by itself. For a titled vehicle, ownership passes when the seller signs the certificate of title over to the buyer and the buyer applies for a new title with the state. The bill of sale is the record of the deal — price, date, vehicle, mileage and “as is” terms — and many states use it to calculate sales or use tax. Keep a copy: it also shows the date after which the seller was no longer responsible for the vehicle.

What does the DMV need to title a car bought from a private seller?

Typically the title signed over by the seller (with the odometer disclosure completed when required), a bill of sale, a title and registration application, proof of insurance, identification, and payment of taxes and fees; some states also require a safety or emissions inspection. The buyer usually has a limited time to apply — in Texas, for example, 30 days from the sale. In many states the seller should also file a notice of sale or transfer, which protects the seller if the buyer delays titling.
